Looking forward to this very much - I’ve still got a one-issue hole and Exit is one of the few things I’ve held onto through moves, marriage and selling off most of my old comics. Congrats!

Already have my pre-order in at my local comic shop. Was totally surprised when I saw this solicited in Previews. I made sure to announce it to the rest of the folks in the shop at the time.

I have two copies of the orginal GN and both have fallen apart (sad) so this will be nice to have.

Didn’t realize you were redrawing a (significant?) chunk, though. I generally love it as is (flaws and all), and am a little nervous to see the “director’s cut.” But I suspect I’ll enjoy this revised edition as well.

Thanks, Brian.Yes,I’m a bit apprehensive about how the new version will be received. I’ve just tried to give the book more of a uniform look throughout, particularly regarding continuity ,facial drawing, character design etc. Also,in those days I didn’t really understand what drawing for reduction was all about, there were just too many tiny shading lines, defining lines, that distorted or broke up on reduction. Speech bubble layout and lettering were haphazard. The eye changes,I suppose. I’m of the belief if you think you can improve something, improve it.I’ve just tried to make the book look as good as I can. I’m sure some won’t like the changes, but my hope is that,in general, people will feel they’re picking up a stronger book. Thanks again for your kind comments!

Nabiel, that makes a whole lot of sense. I appreciate your comments about your creative process, eye, and internal editor. I really am looking forward to the new collection. I can’t wait.

Tangent: Can I say how much I enjoyed your experimentation with moving people and objects across the page in Exit? I’ve always thought you and Paul Grist (a very different stylist) do amazing things with gutters (or lack of gutters) and movement. When I want to show people what I’m talking about when I talk about some of the things you can do in this medium that you can’t in any other, I pull out works by both of you.

    Thanks for your time!

Honestly, I think that’s a shame. Redrawing the book robs it of something. The mark-making was experimental and interesting. The fact is I picked up the self-published run of Exit, and got quite excited about it, on the strength of the drawing. You’ve moved on from there, but when you were there that’s who you were, if you know what I mean, and that meant something to me. I don’t think we should go back and tinker with the work we did to get where we are. Sorry, but I think you’re doing the wrong thing there.

You may well be right, Patrick. All I can say is I’ve just tried to make the book look as good as I can. I hope you’ll reserve judgement til the book is out. Thank you for your kind comments regarding the original version, nonetheless.

Amazed I managed to find this on a late night whim. I worked at Deadline when Exit was featured and I’ve been trying to remember the title for the title for the last 2 hours. Pleased it’s being reissued, the style influenced me a lot at the time as it had a lot of ATMOSPHERE, which is very hard to do in any medium. Glad you’re still at it.

Thanks, Richard. Yeah, I remember those Deadline days fondly, it was a good time for me. Deadline editor Frank Wynne and I used to phone each other up and grumble about the state of the industry! Miss those days, actually.
